Minotaur Frieze

(British Museum)

After the detailed study of the Amazonomachy and the Centauromachy represented in the frieze during the “Et in Arcadia” project, I thought of using the dynamic resources of the composition and the gestures of its figures in an autonomous artwork.

Many of these gestures: a mother protecting her child, a punch, an abduction… were surprisingly contemporary, despite having been formulated 2500 years ago. So I took the composition of zig-zag diagonals, which offers a very powerful reading of movement, and placed the models by selecting a few specific gestures. Obviously, I was not going to paint the frieze faithfully, but to use the resources that seemed interesting to me to create a new painting.
